2022 - Update
I have also reinstated the Instagram account - McNeil Road Urban Garden. Easier way to communicate
The big change has been the cutting of the tree - never good but parts were rotten. I have planted acanthus at intervals
If there is a silver lining then at least there is much more light!
Thank you for planting the daffodils and others, whoever you are

2020 Update
2020 - Camberwell Coffee ground neutral |
A below I have been collecting used coffee grounds from Camberwell Coffee shops – and am now extending the scope of this
The coffee grounds have been used to make compost which I have been using on McNeil Road - you have probably seen it either as a mulch or as composted material I have been collecting 17 kg (dry) a week Coffee grounds make excellent compost when mixed up to 40% with normal garden compost Good compost is usually made from 2/3 ‘green’ materials and 1/3 ‘brown’ Green materials are grass cuttings whilst brown materials are things like unbleached cardboard and dried leaves (though leaves decay differently from normal compost) I’m happy to deliver coffee grounds if you would like some – I am delivering to Thorlands Estate, St Giles Centre and soon to Denmark Hill Station If you want to be involved and are happy to help let me know Nick |
Summer 2019
One of the best summers so far - a combination of early sun and enough rain.
17 kg a week of coffee grounds from the Lumberjack Cafe have been composted (consider as 'green' rather than 'brown' in the compost mix) - and some has gone on McNeil Road

August 2017
July 2017 - year of the hollyhocks...
Usual busy times. Acanthus and hollyhocks looking good this year - as is the lychnis (bad last year). One tree fell over after the heavy rain (very small root clump so had never really taken). Still struggling to get things going in the dry shade - help anyone? I'm picking up less and less litter which is good.
2016 at least drought is not a problem...
2016 - April - another update
I've been adding to the blog rather than this page.
The long winter months are over - usually about half a bin liner a week of litter but Spring always better as people see that we are making an effort.
Daffodils have come and gone, forget me not is good at the moment. Acanthus always consistent.
I have been planting:
Acanthus
Periwinkle
Forget me not
Meadow mix
Nasturtiums
Irises
The Council have hit the knotweed hard and much of it seems to have gone (rule of thumb seems to be to allow 3+ years to eradicate...)
Hoping for a good summer

Summer 2015
Spring 2015
Summer 2014
The garden grew well this summer - the compost is helping and less litter. Now a small bag a week... still some dumping (builder's planks too big to take away).
Why not plant something? The plan is to plant along the strip (downhill)
Nothing much taking under the trees at the junction with Camberwell Grove. Have planted periwinkle and some has taken. Acanthus now established. Some sedum too - but this on edges of the trees where more rain and light.
